Oven Not Heating? Dinner Doesn't Have to Wait
An oven that won't heat — or heats unevenly, or takes an hour to reach 350° — usually comes down to one of three parts: the bake element, the igniter, or the temperature sensor. All three are common service repairs with genuine OEM parts.
West Coast Wrench repairs electric and gas ovens, stoves, and ranges across Greater Victoria seven days a week, including induction cooktops and vintage professional ranges that other shops won't touch.
Why Your Oven Is Failing
Failed bake element (electric ovens)
The element that glows during baking burns out eventually — visibly blistered or broken, or cold while the broil element still works. The OEM replacement restores exact factory heat.
Weak or dead igniter (gas ovens)
The most common gas-oven fault in Victoria. An igniter can glow yet draw too little current to open the safety valve — the oven smells faintly of gas but never lights. We measure the current, not just the glow.
Faulty temperature sensor or thermostat
A sensor reading even 40° off makes the control board regulate to the wrong temperature — the "everything burns at 350°" complaint.
Control board or relay failure
When elements and igniters test fine but never energize, a welded or failed board relay is the culprit. We diagnose to component level before recommending a board.
Burned wire connections
High-current connections at the element and terminal block scorch over years. A burnt lug mimics an element failure — and it's a fire risk we always inspect.
Gas valve or regulator faults
Weak oven burner flame or a burner that lights then dies points to the valve or pressure regulator — a job for a licensed technician with gas-safe testing equipment.
Quick Checks You Can Do Right Now
Broil vs bake
If broil works and bake doesn't (or vice versa), one element or one igniter circuit has failed — a clean, single-part diagnosis in most cases.
Use an oven thermometer
Dial and digital displays drift. An inexpensive oven thermometer confirms whether the oven truly runs cold or the display lies — bring that data to the call.
Never ignore a gas smell
If you smell gas around the oven, stop using it and contact a qualified gas-appliance professional immediately.
Oven Repair FAQ
Why does my oven take so long to heat up?
Usually a failing bake element, a weak igniter (gas), or an off-calibration sensor — the oven works, but slowly and unevenly. We measure the actual element current and sensor readings, then quote a clear price for the exact fix.
