Why Is My Washing Machine Shaking Violently on Spin Cycle?

When a front-load washer ramps up to 1,200 RPM and starts jackhammering the floorboards, walking across the room, or banging like a freight train, continuing to run loads will rip hoses and crack outer tubs. Here is how our technicians isolate leveling issues from blown shock dampers and cracked spider brackets.

The High-Speed Physics of Front-Load Washers

A modern front-load washer spins wet laundry at 1,000 to 1,400 RPM. At that speed, just 500 grams of unbalanced wet towels exerts hundreds of pounds of centrifugal force on the tub assembly.

To keep that energy from wrecking your home, the machine relies on a 3-part stabilization suspension system: heavy cast-iron or concrete counterweights, top suspension springs that hang the tub, and bottom hydraulic/friction shock absorber struts that snub harmonic oscillation. If any leg of this system weakens, the energy transfers straight into your floor.

Step 1: Check Leveling Legs and Jam Nuts

Before suspecting internal hardware, check contact with the floor. Place your hands on opposite diagonal corners of the washer (top-left and bottom-right) and try to rock it back and forth. If you feel even 1 millimeter of teeter-totter wobble, the machine cannot balance at high spin.

Thread the adjustable leveling feet down until all four feet bear equal weight. Crucially, take an adjustable wrench and tighten the lock nuts (jam nuts) upward flush against the machine base frame. If lock nuts remain loose, high-speed vibration will spin the foot threads down within two weeks.

Step 2: Blown Shock Absorbers (Friction Dampers)

Beneath the tub, two to four friction shock absorber struts anchor the outer tub to the base frame. Their job is identical to car shocks: dampen bouncy rebound.

When the internal foam or grease seals wear out, the tub bounces freely like a pogo stick. To test them with the machine unplugged, push down firmly on the stainless steel drum from inside the door and release quickly. A healthy washer rebounds once and immediately stabilizes. If the drum bounces two or three times like a trampoline, the shocks are blown and must be replaced in complete sets.

Step 3: The Fatal Flaw: Broken Spider Bracket (Trunnion)

If your washer bangs violently even with zero clothes inside, the culprit is almost always a cracked spider bracket. The spider is a three-legged cast-aluminum support bolted to the back of the stainless steel wash basket that connects to the drive shaft.

In older machines or homes that use excess liquid detergent and cold water, alkaline residue collects behind the drum, triggering galvanic corrosion. One arm of the aluminum spider snaps in half.

The Pro Drum Test: Reach into the drum and gently push upward on the stainless steel rim at the top, rotating the drum by hand every 120 degrees. If two positions feel rock-solid but one position gives several millimetres of loose play and clunks against the plastic outer tub, the spider bracket is broken. Running the machine further will gouge a hole in the outer tub and flood your laundry room.

Professional Laundry Restoration in Greater Victoria

Replacing suspension struts or diagnosing tub bearings requires disassembly of the front fascia, bellows seal, and motor stator. At West Coast Wrench, we stock OEM heavy-duty shock dampers for LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Bosch, and Electrolux washers, restoring whisper-quiet spin performance without the cost of a new machine.
