Why Cash Handling Machines Need Preventative Care
Banknotes are among the dirtiest physical items in circulation. Over thousands of hands, bills absorb skin sebum oils, atmospheric grime, dust, and food oils. When dragged through feed rollers at 1,000 notes per minute, these oils glaze onto rubber drive surfaces and aerosolize into fine black soot inside the optical transport tunnel.
Without disciplined maintenance, rubber rollers lose friction, feed gaps drift out of tolerance, and optical receiver diodes blind over, causing chronic double-feeds, skewed notes, and phantom error codes.
The Standard Cash Room Maintenance Schedule
1. Daily Closing Checklist (2 Minutes)
- Power down the machine before cleaning.
- Open the rear transport access cover.
- Gently wipe the hopper feed plate and stacker pocket with a dry microfiber cloth to remove surface grit.
- Inspect the hopper throat for paper clips, rubber bands, or torn polymer banknote corners.
2. Weekly Deep-Clean Protocol (10 Minutes)
- Sensor Array Cleaning: Use a specialized lint-free foam swab moistened with 99% isopropyl alcohol to wipe all infrared count diodes, UV lenses, and CIS glass windows. Dry immediately with a fresh swab.
- Roller Rubber Dressing: Clean all urethane and rubber feed rollers using roller-cleaning solvent or 99% alcohol while manually rotating the drive shaft. This removes slick oil glazes and restores gripping friction.
- Debris Cavity Vacuum: Use an ESD-safe micro-vacuum to extract accumulated dust from the lower chassis floor beneath the stacker vanes.
3. Monthly Feed Gap Micrometer Tuning
The gap between the rotating hopper feed rollers and the stationary rubber friction retarder shoes determines whether the machine feeds a single bill or pulls doubles. As friction shoes wear down, the gap widens microscopically.
How to Tune the Gap:
- Locate the knurled feed gap adjustment wheel on the rear or top hopper panel.
- Insert a single crisp genuine polymer $20 bill between the feed rollers.
- Turn the adjustment dial clockwise until slight drag is felt when pulling the bill out by hand (it should slide with moderate resistance, not bind tight).
- Insert two bills stacked together. The second bill should slip back freely while only the first bill is gripped.
