The Gravity Trap Under Your Sink
Your kitchen sink drain and your dishwasher drain share a single plumbing connection into the P-trap. When you wash pots, rinse chicken grease, or drain a full sink basin, that water rushes down toward the main stack under atmospheric pressure.
If your flexible dishwasher drain hose lies flat on the bottom of the cabinet floor, basic physics takes over: water seeks its own level. The dirty water from your sink drain easily overflows into the low-slung hose, traveling backward down the line and filling your dishwasher sump with greasy sewage.
What Is a "High Loop"?
A high loop is deceptively simple: it is the practice of routing the flexible dishwasher drain line as high as physically possible under the kitchen counter—fastening it securely to the underside of the countertop deck—before looping back down to connect to the sink tailpiece or garburator nipple.
By raising the apex of the hose at least 32 inches (81 cm) above the finished floor and above the flood level rim of the sink P-trap, you create a gravity air barrier. Sink water cannot flow uphill against gravity to cross that apex.
The Three Danger Signs of Missing High Loops
- Foul Rotten-Egg or Sewage Smells: Food scraps from your sink disposal sit stagnant in the dishwasher drain pump cavity between cycles.
- Spontaneous Water Pooling: Water appears in the dishwasher tub after running the garbage disposal or washing dishes in the sink.
- Premature Check Valve Failure: The small rubber flapper in the dishwasher pump degrades rapidly when constantly submerged in hot, greasy sink backflow.
How to Check Your Own Drain Loop in 30 Seconds
Open the cabinet doors beneath your kitchen sink with a flashlight and trace the corrugated plastic hose coming through the cabinet partition wall from your dishwasher:
- If the hose immediately droops down to the cabinet floor and runs directly to the disposal, you have no high loop.
- To fix it: lift the hose and secure it directly to the underside of the countertop with a galvanized pipe strap or heavy-duty cable tie screwed into the upper cabinet frame. Ensure there are no kinks in the bend that restrict pump discharge.
When to Book Professional Plumbing & Appliance Service
If your drain hose is already secured in a proper high loop but water continues to back up, you may have a calcified internal drain check valve, a cracked disposal tee, or a partially clogged P-trap causing sink backups. Our technicians carry replacement check valves and heavy-duty reinforced drain lines across Victoria.
