Condensation & Heat Pump Dryer Care: Heat Exchanger Fluff & Floats

In hundreds of high-density condominiums across downtown Victoria, Songhees, and Langford, exterior exhaust ducts are prohibited. Residents rely on ventless condensation and heat pump dryers. Here is how to keep secondary heat exchangers and condensate pumps running at peak efficiency.

How Ventless Dryers Work Differently

Standard vented dryers suck in room air, blast it over an electric element, and blow humid air outside through a 4-inch foil duct. Ventless dryers (Bosch 300/500/800 Series, Miele T1, Blomberg, Beko) recirculate the same air in a closed loop.

Hot, moisture-saturated air leaves the clothes drum and passes through a chilled heat exchanger. As the air rapidly cools, moisture condenses into liquid water droplets, which drip down into an internal collection sump. A small miniature lift pump then pumps this water either into a removable top slide-out tank or directly down the washer drain standpipe.

1. The Secondary Heat Exchanger Blockage

While homeowners remember to clean the door lint screen, micro-fibres pass through the primary mesh and hit the moisture-soaked aluminum cooling fins of the heat exchanger cassette behind the bottom kickplate door.

Within six months, wet lint forms a felt-like blanket across the exchanger face. Airflow drops by 70%, cycles stretch from 60 minutes to 3.5 hours, and clothes emerge clammy and hot.

Cleaning Protocol:

The "Empty Water Tank" False Alarm: If your dryer stops 10 minutes into the cycle beeping with a tank full warning—even though the slide-out tank is bone dry—lint sludge has jammed the internal float switch in the bottom sump basin.

2. Condensate Sump Pump & Float Slime

The bottom drainage sump operates under warm, damp conditions ideal for bacterial bio-slime. Laundry detergent fragrance residues combine with wet lint to form sticky gray sludge around the miniature submersible lift pump and styrofoam float switch.

When the float gets glued in the raised position, the electronic board assumes the top collection tank is overflowing and halts the cycle. Disassembling the rear pump tray, cleaning the impeller cavity, and flushing the check valve restores normal operation.

3. Plumbed vs Tank Operation in Strata Suites

Every European ventless dryer comes with a direct-drain hose bypass kit. If you are tired of emptying a 4-litre plastic reservoir every load, our technicians can reroute the condensate output directly into your laundry standpipe with a high-loop siphon break, eliminating tank handling forever.
