Repair or Replace? An Honest Framework (From the People Who Get Paid Either Way)

We repair appliances for a living, so you'd expect us to say "repair everything." We won't. Some machines deserve a dignified end; some faults are cheap fixes on expensive machines. Here's the honest framework we'd use if you were family.

The one question that decides most cases

Is the fault a component or the core? Components fail and get replaced: pumps, fans, elements, igniters, sensors, switches, door seals. The core is the compressor (fridges), the transmission/direct-drive system (top-load washers), or the sealed tub assembly — when the core fails, the economics usually flip.

Here's the thing: most faults we diagnose are components. Compressor failures, tub bearing failures — they happen, but they're the minority of service calls by a wide margin.

Where repair almost always wins

High-end machines: Sub-Zero, Miele, Bosch, pro-style ranges, built-in integrated columns. These are engineered to be serviced, with parts availability measured in decades. A component repair on a premium machine is almost always a fraction of replacement.

Vintage and discontinued units: older machines were over-built. A 20-year-old top-load washer with one failed part is often a better machine than its modern replacement.

Recent purchases with a failure: a 3-year-old appliance with a failed component is a repair, full stop — replacement cost is all downside.

Where replacement deserves honest consideration

Basic, older machines with a core failure: a sealed-system fridge failure on an entry-level 12-year-old unit, or a transmission failure on a basic top-loader. The repair is real work with real parts cost, and the rest of the machine has the same years on it.

When the quote approaches the cost of a comparable new machine AND the machine is past its design life, we'll say so. We'd rather tell you the truth and lose the job than sell you a repair you'll regret.

The diagnostic-first principle

Don't decide anything until someone has actually measured what's wrong. Error codes are hints, not verdicts — we've traced "failed control board" codes to a $20 sensor and "dead compressor" symptoms to a failed start relay more times than we can count.

That's why we diagnose first and quote a clear price before any work begins. You get real numbers and a professional's read on the machine's condition — then the decision is yours, made with information instead of anxiety.

And if replacement genuinely is the smarter call, we do that too: professional removal and eco-friendly disposal of the old unit, and installation of the new one — built-in and integrated units included.
