Dryer Not Heating? Clothes Cold and Damp?
A dryer that tumbles but never heats turns a 45-minute cycle into an all-day affair — and it's one of the most repairable appliance faults there is. On electric dryers it's usually the element, a thermal cutoff, or a cycling thermostat; on gas dryers, the igniter or valve coils. West Coast Wrench fixes both, seven days a week across Greater Victoria.
One warning worth repeating: a no-heat symptom can also mean a blocked vent. Lint-choked ducts don't just kill drying performance — they're a genuine fire hazard. Every heating repair we do includes a vent airflow check.
Why Your Dryer Is Failing
Broken heating element (electric)
The element is a wire coil that simply burns through over years of heat cycling. An ohmmeter confirms it in minutes — and the OEM replacement restores full heat.
Blown thermal fuse
A safety device that kills heat when the machine runs too hot — usually because of a blocked vent. We replace the fuse AND fix the cause, or it blows again within weeks.
Failed cycling thermostat or thermistor
These regulate drum temperature. A misreading sensor makes the dryer run lukewarm or cold while everything else seems fine.
Gas igniter or valve coils (gas dryers)
The igniter glows to light the burner; the valve coils open to feed gas. Coils often fail warm — the first load dries, the second runs cold.
Blocked or crushed vent ducting
Restricted airflow trips the high-limit safety and the burner or element cycles off. Long duct runs with elbows are the usual culprit — we check the whole path.
Control board or timer fault
When the motor runs but heat never energizes and the sensors test fine, the control side is at fault. We diagnose board-level faults before recommending replacement.
Quick Checks You Can Do Right Now
Check the vent outside
While the dryer runs, feel the exterior vent flap — weak or no airflow means a blockage that must be cleared before any heating fault is chased.
Clean the lint filter properly
Wash the lint screen with warm soapy water occasionally — fabric softener builds an invisible film that chokes airflow.
Don't run it overloaded
An overloaded drum can't tumble air through the load, tripping safeties and mimicking a heating fault. Test with a normal-size load first.
Dryer Repair FAQ
Why does my dryer spin but produce no heat?
On electric dryers, the heating element or a blown thermal fuse is the most common cause; on gas dryers, the igniter or burner coils. Both are common service repairs — call (236) 330-7180 for a quote across Greater Victoria.
Is a dryer that takes too long a safety concern?
It can be. Slow drying often means restricted airflow from lint buildup in the duct — a leading cause of dryer fires. Every no-heat or slow-dry repair we complete includes a vent airflow check.
